I wanted to show you our coffee and tea station. This is the first place I go, bleary eyed, in the morning. I’m going to work around clockwise from the sugar bowl.
-The sugar bowl (and blue tea bag holder/spoon rest). A gift from sister-in–law Katrina, from the Hutson women’s favorite place to get pottery in North Carolina.
-The brown tea pot. Handmade by Stephie Crews. I think it looks like an African artifact, and it’s perfect for two cups.
-The tea cozy. A gift from Sandra McCracken during her travels in England.
-The coffee behind the cozy. David Van Buskirk, the songwriter/graphic designer who lives upstairs, also has a gig at Starbucks and hooks us up.
-The sweater around the french press. Lovingly knit and sewn by Emily Bryan out of beautiful Icelandic wool for my birthday this year. (Emily is the proprietor of Ebba Handmade, on my links.)
-The brown spoon rest. One of Alice Smith’s first pieces of pottery.
-The tiny mug in the middle, made by Sally Wingate, mama of Sarah Siskind, amazing musician and surrogate mama to everyone. I went to the Station Inn last weekend and held pieces of Sally’s pottery in my hand for an hour until the right one said “keep me”.
-The clothespin (for closing coffee bags) was my grandma’s- somehow I ended up with the clothespins when she died, and I used them all over my kitchen.
-The apron that’s hanging down, by the way- a gift from my friend Mollie Durbin at her bridesmaid shower.
Here is my morning collection of things that I hold and use as I’m waking up.. I feel like there’s a little liturgy of how I’m loved in the process of making our morning coffee or tea, little reminders of dear people in our lives. Much love per square inch.
thanks for sharing with us, katy. your rituals always seem just bathed in love and intentionality and community. you inspire me <3
You are as sweet as this little table, and I’m glad to know you.
I love everything about this - not just the coffee and tea aspects, but also that so many items remind you of loved ones. And, I love pottery, too.
