My friend Jenni Simmons wrote about a new magazine called Small, all about little things for little people. By which I mean children. Jenni has eyes that see wonder, and we just had a lovely iChat conversation about how we’re made to have more wonder as we grow up, and not less. I started reading The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe with LaToya, my reading buddy at KIPP. Maybe I ought to post about KIPP tomorrow- it’s a rather phenomenal school. Reading one of my favorite stories with a young lady who’s reading it for the first time is a wonderful thing- I’m watching her try to gulp the whole thing down in one swallow. All that to say, wonder- it’s so lovely to see, and a faculty that we adults are meant to cultivate in ourselves and others.

Jenni’s spectacular at that. Visit her at Dreams of Genevieve, and go have a look at her article at The Curator on Small.
Lovely images… I adore wonder and amazement and the youthfulness of it all. I’m glad you’re reading CS Lewis with LaToya. She needs to learn to dream. They say (those smart people who do surveys) that one of the main reasons children grow up and continue in a cycle of poverty and don’t overcome is because they stopped dreaming. Dreaming about what could be… dreaming about things bigger than themselves. They don’t dare dream about college or careers or a life void of oppression.
Keep reading and dreaming with her. I’m so thrilled for these KIPP kids who at least have a fighting chance now.
Love you girl. Deb
Isn’t it true? I keep coming back to “Where there is no vision, the people perish”. Imagination, coming to fruition in creating, is crucial. No imagining, no making. Good stuff, Deb.
